A short list of the most beautiful and picturesque places to visit while in Oman.

Often described as the jewel in the crown of the Middle East, Oman is a much overlooked travel destination in comparison to its more popular neighbours. From it's incredible natural wonders to the many so adventure filled activities on offer, this stunning country is to date one of my all time favourite travel experiences.

Here’s a list of must visit and most instagrammable locations to hit up while there.

1. Wadi Bani Khalid/ Wadis of Oman

The shimmering emerald lakes of Wadi Bani Khalid are a truly spectacular sight to behold, never in my life have I experienced anything quite like it. Wadi Bani Khalid is one of the best-known wadis in the Sultanate of Oman yet due to its rural location it is still a quiet spot with very little tourism. Its stream maintains a constant flow of water throughout the year so you can visit anytime. You’ll find many locals go swimming in them during the hot days or in the afternoons once it’s cooler but usually you'll have the waters further down to yourself.

Oman is famed for its natural wadis and there are hundreds if not thousands throughout the country, make sure to check out at least a few while there. I promise they will not disappoint!

2. Fort Nizwa

If you’re looking for some history during your trip then a visit to the old capital of Nizwa is the place to go. Originally built in the 9th century but renewed in the 17th century, the fort and castle at Nizwa is a perfect illustration of old Omani architecture. If you stay till early evening you’ll experience the most beautiful sunset from the fort walls. Just an hour or so from Muscat, there are also plenty of Souks to stop at for a cup of tea and some shopping.

3. Wahiba Sands

You can't visit the Middle East without visiting at least one desert! Whether you’re just visiting for the day or staying - there’s plenty to do in Wahiba sands. Take your pick of luxury desert camps, dune bashing or much more - If you want to experience a tranquil sea of endless sandunes then this place is truly magic. One tip is to make sure you have a 4x4 to get there as the roads are non exsistent.

4. Grand Mosque

One of the main things to should do when visiting Muscat is visit The Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque. The mosque was completed in 2001 and took a total of six years to build. It covers a massive area of 416,000 square meters, and can hold up to 20,000 worshipers in one go. It is stunningly beautiful and so peaceful to visit. The design is spectacular, with its high looming arches and flawless stone walls. Entry is free but be aware you will have to fully cover your arms, legs and head to enter this Mosque.

5. Wadi Nakhr

As I mentioned previously the Wadis in Oman are easily the most beautiful and picturesque places you’ll encounter. Wadi Nakhr is no exception. With its looming arches and valleys, the wadi is one of the harder ones to get to but so worth the trek for its turquoise deep filled waters.

6. Bimham sinkhole

Bimham is a pretty natural sinkhole with stunning pale blue waters and easy access, ideal for a bit of wild swimming in the midday heat. Tucked along the coast only 1hr 20mins from Muscat, Its super easy to get to but it is hidden away so keep your eyes peeled for the side street as signage is limited. Entry is free and you can swim here.

7. Sur beach

Sur is a funny little town with a pretty little harbour. There are some beautiful traditional old parts but when you first arrive you will say to yourself where the hell am I? It’s a bit off the beaten track but the beach at sunset, looking out across the harbour as the local children cool off in the sea is a truly magical sight to behold and so beautiful.

8. Turtle reserve and beach

Raz Al Jinz is a hotel and nature reserve that protects the turtles that nest on the beaches in the surrounding areas below Sur. You can lodge at the reserve and learn about the turtles and how they protect them. During your stay you can help out and experience the turtles in their natural habitat. They have early morning wake up calls so you can watch the turtle eggs hatching for the first time before going out to sea. Truly wonderful.

9. The pink lake

Another natural wonder of Oman are the incredible pink lakes of Al Suwaih. When I say pink I mean pink too. According to studies the lakes obtain their pink hues from a type of algae that grows within salt fields. Situated about 300km away from the capital city Muscat, the Pink Lake in Al Suwaih takes a little over three hours by drive but is so worth the road trip!

10. Wadi Shab

Another glittering example of the beautiful Wadis is Wadi Shab. One of the more popular wadis but no less beautiful, Shab is located between Muscat and Sur with a beautiful river of jewel coloured water flowing between the valleys. Theres many hidden pools and waterfalls to explore along the way.
