I N T R O
Nestled along the Costa Dorada, Tarragona is a Spanish city that effortlessly blends ancient history with coastal beauty, offering a unique charm that invites both relaxation and exploration. Often overshadowed by Barcelona’s grandeur, Tarragona is a hidden gem that reveals its allure through its well-preserved Roman ruins, medieval streets, and stunning Mediterranean coastline. My recent visit to this enchanting city left me captivated by its timeless romance and warm, inviting spirit.

Stepping Back in Time - The Roman Legacy
Tarragona's historical roots run deep, and it’s a city where the past feels intimately woven into the present. The city's Roman heritage is one of its most compelling features. Wandering through the ancient streets of Tarragona, I found myself marvelling at the well-preserved ruins that speak of a bygone era. The Roman Amphitheatre, perched dramatically on the edge of the Mediterranean, offered an incredible backdrop of both history and sea.

A visit to the Tarragona Cathedral, a majestic structure that combines Romanesque and Gothic styles, is a must. The cathedral's incredible cloisters and intricately detailed façade provide a tranquil escape from the bustling city. Standing in its shadow, I felt a deep connection to the centuries of history that have unfolded in this place. Surrounded by a great choice of restaurants and bars, it's the perfect spot to slow down and people watch.
Coastal Beauty and Mediterranean Bliss
Tarragona's coastline is a treasure trove of natural beauty. The Platja del Miracle, with its golden sands and clear turquoise waters, is a perfect spot for unwinding after a day of sightseeing. The beach’s relaxed atmosphere, coupled with its stunning views of the Mediterranean, made it an ideal place to soak up the sun and savour the sea breeze. I spent hours lounging by the shore and exploring the nearby harbour with its host of mega yacht's belonging to the super rich.

The Cala Fonda, or Waikiki Beach, further south offers a more secluded experience. This hidden cove, with its crystal-clear waters and rocky surroundings, felt like a personal paradise. It’s a bit off the beaten path, but the natural beauty alone makes the effort to find it well worth it.
A Stroll Through History and Romance
Tarragona’s old town is a labyrinth of narrow, winding streets that invite exploration. The Part Alta, or the historic centre, is a charming maze of cobblestone alleys, quaint shops, and picturesque squares. As I wandered through this area, I was struck by the city’s romantic ambience. The medieval architecture, with its stone buildings and charming facades, created a sense of timelessness. It's the perfect place for a romantic weekend away.
The Plaça de la Font, a bustling square surrounded by historic buildings and lively restaurants, is the heart of the city’s social life. Here, I experienced the warmth of Tarragona’s hospitality, enjoying delicious local cuisine while soaking in the vibrant atmosphere. The square comes alive in the evenings, with locals and visitors alike gathering to enjoy tapas and listen to live music.

Culinary Delights and Local Flavours
Tarragona’s culinary scene is a delightful blend of traditional Catalan flavours and innovative cuisine. I indulged in a local specialty at El Llagut, a renowned restaurant known for its seafood dishes. The paella and fresh calamari were exceptional, highlighting the city’s connection to the Mediterranean Sea.
Another standout was the Mercat Central, a vibrant market where I discovered a bounty of local produce, cheeses, and cured meats. Strolling through the stalls the market is truly alive. The market is a sensory feast, and sampling the local delicacies was a highlight of my culinary adventure in Tarragona.

A place to relax
What made my visit to Tarragona truly special was the warmth of its people. From the friendly locals at the market to the welcoming staff at the cafés and restaurants, there was a genuine sense of hospitality that made me feel right at home. Tarragona’s charm is not just in its historic sites and natural beauty, but in the array of fabulous places to stay. During my visit I stayed at the H10 Tarragona which boast charming modern interiors, sea view balcony rooms and a rooftop pool with 360 degree panoramas. There's even a rooftop cocktail bar!

Final word
As I prepared to leave this captivating city, I couldn’t help but reflect on the deep sense of romance and enchantment that Tarragona had offered. It’s a place where history and the new come together in perfect harmony, where every street and every view tells a story. For anyone seeking a destination that combines the allure of ancient history with the beauty of the Mediterranean, Tarragona is a city that promises a memorable and deeply rewarding experience.
