Tucked away in the mountains of Oman, sits the beautiful old capital of Nizwa, an ancient city in the Ad Dakhiliyah region of northern Oman and old fort town that has remained the same since its beginnings in the early 9th century. If you’re looking for some history during your trip then a visit to the old capital of Nizwa is the place to go. Easily accessible by car from Muscat, the scenic drive through the mountains is a breezy 90 minutes which will take you directly to its beating heart - Fort Nizwa.
Fort nizwa
Fort Nizwa the gem at the heart of the old capital is the biggest draw into the historic city. Originally built in the 9th century but renewed in the 17th century, the fort and castle at Nizwa is a perfect illustration of old Omani architecture. It’s tall, sandy terracotta high walls and maze like interiors are truly charming and take you back in time. It is someone maze like and enchanting to explore and a wonderful insight into what life was once like in the Middle East.
TIP - If you stay till early evening you’ll experience the most beautiful sunset from the fort walls. They also have nearby Souks for a little mooch around afterwards.
Cost of entry
Entry costs are 5 Omani Rial per person which works out at just under £10 per adult.
Accommodation
Accommodation in Nizwa works out at roughly £50 per night to stay in a nice B&B in the centre of town with breakfast, I highly recommend spending a few days up in the region so that you can explore the canyons and Ad Dakhiliyah area in more detail.

Getting around Oman
The best away to get around in Oman is by car, with very little in the way of public transport driving is pretty essential here. You can hire a driver but unless you have a lot of cash to splash it’ll be very expensive.
Driving in Oman is easy, the roads are simple and well built. The further out of Muscat you go the easier they get, many of the roads further south are completely empty. Having driven in many parts of the world I would argue it’s better than driving in most of Europe. Most of the roads and highways have only recently been rebuilt and modernised so driving conditions are perfect.

We hired a car from the airport through Avis for 40 GBP per day. All cars are automatic in Oman and make sure to get a 4x4 if you plan to go to off road.
Let me know your thoughts on Oman and if this is a country you've been to or would love to explore!
